Why Fiji should be your next trip!

Aimee Pemeberton , Calder & Lawsons' Junior Consultant - had the time of her life in Fiji earlier this year. After a short 3hr flight from Auckland she landed in paradise. Aimee visited 24 resorts, from Denarau to the Mamanuca Islands before exploring the Coral Coast. She ventured into Sigatoka on a river safari and zip line through a forest for a bit of an adrenaline rush.

Below are Aimee's top 5 highlights and why Fiji should be your next trip:

1. People

Fiji will always have a special place in Aimee's heart due to the people. They are always smiling and are super friendly. The staff at the resorts go above and beyond expectations to make your holiday experience exceptional.

2. Kokoda and Kava

If you're a bit of a foodie and love fresh seafood this is where you need to be. The famous Kokoda(said kokunda )is Aimee's  favourite Fijian dish made with fresh raw fish, lemon juice, coconut cream, chilli, spring onions, tomato, onions… The acid of the lemon cooks the fish and it is beautiful!

Kava is a ceremonial drink enjoyed by the locals and anyone of any age can too. It is made from the root of the pepper plant which grows throughout Fiji. It does not contain alcohol but brings a calming effect on consumption.

3. Beaches

Fiji is home to hundreds of gorgeous beaches so it's easy to find your own little secluded spot to relax. You can snorkel right off the beach in most areas too and swim with beautifully coloured fish and the world's richest soft coral. Most resorts supply snorkelling equipment for free if you don't have your own.

4. Accommodation

Fiji has lots of resorts to cater to your budget and style. From basic accommodation to 5 star luxury, adults only or family orientated - there's something to fit everyone.

Aimee's favourite resorts:

  • Raddison Blu (in Denarau) - Stunning restaurant that faces the sunset, 5 star, has a kids club, huge complex.
  • Malolo Island Resort (in the Mamanuca Islands) - boutique modern beach house style villas, fantastic kids club, Treetops restaurant does incredible food and cocktails.
  • Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort (in Coral Coast) - Best Oceanview rooms in Fiji, 5pm tapas and champagne brought to your room daily, award winning restaurant.

5. Adventure

The Sigatoka River Safari is a must do tour. Take a 15km journey up the Sigatoka River by jet boat while learning about the area. Visit one of the 16 villages to experience the Fijian culture. Participate in a kava ceremony, enjoy lunch and singing and dancing with the locals. On the journey back, be sure to hold on as the jet boat does 360 degree spins.

Another great place to visit is Kula Eco Park. Enjoy one of the many boardwalks through acres of natural forest. See the different birds, reptiles and marine life. Children can enjoy a hands on experience at the Environmental Education Centre or play on the waterslide and water playground. For those who want more action dare yourself to a ride on the roller-coaster Zip Rail. Fly from the canopy, around trees, through the forest and down to the river bed.

As you can see, Fiji is a fantastic destination to visit whether you're after a holiday where you can relax on a beach or are more of the adventurous type there's something for everyone.
