Melbourne - Retail Therapy Paradise

There's nothing better than coming back from holidaying overseas with something different to the standard chain store purchase. Melbourne doesn't disappoint, in fact it's retail heaven.

Clothes, homeware and, for the sanity of my husband, motorbike shops all in the CBD - everyone's happy. In fact I could actually open a shoe shop, short of not wanting to part with any of the pairs I've bought.

We're in Melbourne for the Australian Tennis Open but we decided to extend the visit to make the most of this multi-cultural, sports-mad city.

My mum has joined us with a friend of hers,Cea.

My friends and I think my husband is so lovely putting up with three females, two of them over 70! Others think he's just bloody nuts!

Television dedicates a channel to the tennis 24/7 and the whole city gets behind it with creative displays in windows, making it feel festive and all the more exciting that we're here for the first Grand Slam of 2014.

Locals tell us tales of air conditioning breaking down and frying eggs outside under the baking sun. Thankfully the heat is back to normal 22-26.

Calder & Lawson House of Travel advised us on accommodation and we're perfectly located at the Mercure On Swanston - walking distance to the tennis and in the same block as David Jones.

Hardware Lane is a two minute walk away, pulsating with live music and cuisine options the United Nations would be proud of.

We seem to have packed so much into just 24 hours.
